The fight against the scourge of human trafficking in Nigeria has received the attention of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, (UNODC) office in Nigeria.

The UNODC through its officer in charge in Nigeria, Elisabeth Bayer while speaking at the commemoration of the 2017 European Union Anti Trafficking Day in Abuja on Wednesday, stated that it has empowered 400 victims of human trafficking in the country in the last two years.

In addition to that is the training of 300 officers and men of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on prevention, protection, prosecution and partnership.

According to Ms Bayer, the intervention is necessary because the country faces challenges, as a well-known source, transit and destination country for women and children for different forms of human trafficking.

Nigeria has been described as a source, transit, and destination country for women and children subjected to trafficking in persons including forced labour and forced prostitution to neighbouring countries like Gabon, Cameroon, Ghana, Chad, Benin, Togo, Niger, Burkina Faso
