[The Activism Blog] Don’t reform SARS, scrap it!

EndSars

Respite is yet to come the way of the Nigerian Police Force State Anti-Robbery Squad SARS unit as demands for the  scrapping of the once efficient unit is now heightened. The effort of the Nigerian Police to rewrite the #EndSARS narrative as #ReformSARS is not working as the call for the scrapping of the unit is on the increase.

The convener of the #EndSARS campaign Mr Segun Awosanya yesterday December 11,2017 lead a group of protesters to the unity fountain in Abuja in continuation of their demand for the scrapping of the SARS unit. According to Awosanya reforming the unit would amount to a waste of time and resources going by the level of atrocities committed by the unit as stated by Nigerians across the social media and other fora.

Speaking further he said  “Nigerians have spent the last one week highlighting the travails have suffered in the hands of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS),” he said.

“The stories that have been recounted on social media include those of torture, lack of respect for the rule of law, extortion, extra-judicial murder and disappearance of hundreds of people.

“These actions are indicative that this unit has outlived its usefulness and now constitute a clear and present threat to the safety, welfare and well being of Nigerians. We make these simple demands – we demand for an outright scrapping of the SARS unit across the country. Its members have become engrossed in crime, extortion and disrespect for the rule of law in a manner that any reform is a waste of time.”

The stand of Awosanya and his group on scrapping of the unit has received support from Nigerians even though the Nigerian Police has tagged him and other Nigerians calling for the scrapping of SARS as armed robbers and failed politicians they are unperturbed as the #EndSARS rally took place in Abuja, Lagos and other Nigerian cities yesterday.

Awosanya just announced that he has raised $1,000 as preliminary logistical fees for a class action lawsuit he and a legal team intend to open agains the Nigerian government for letting this go on for this long. We hope he follows through.
