This activist says Yoruba politicians lack the vision Awolowo had

The President, Rights Monitoring Group, Olufemi Aduwo, has supported a claim that the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, was the Yoruba leader when he was alive.

He lamented that after the death of Awolowo, the position of Yoruba leadership had been devalued by politicians in the region because of their lack of vision to build on the legacies left behind by Awolowo.

He said, “The first level of leadership is position and when authority is conferred on a person. At that level, the person becomes a leader of the people because he has been elected or selected by the people to lead them.

“The then Ooni of Ife (Oba Adesoji Aderemi) confirmed the people’s wish by giving his royal and spiritual blessing to the selection of Papa Awolowo as Yoruba leader and bestowed the title of Asiwaju (leader) on him. Possibly, that was how the Asiwaju title came into vogue in Yoruba chieftaincy title across the land.

“The Yoruba across the world need a focused and trusted leader whose concern goes beyond local political arrangement in this 21st Century.”
