Comedian, Bill Maher was up to the usual business on his talk show, Real Time With Bill Maher when he dropped  the N-word in an interview session with Nebraska Senator, Ben Sasse.

According to Vox.com, Maher raised a question about adults dressing up for Halloween in Nebraska, it was yet another joke set in motion. Sasse then passed an invitation to Maher to visit Nebraska, he said, “You’re welcome. We’d love to have you work in the fields with us.” Maher’s riposte to this seemingly harmless conversation was what sparked controversy across the US. He said, “Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n*****.”

Critics have called on cable network, HBO to cancel his show and fire him and others have described him as a “habitual line-stepper“. Among the Nigerian entertainment audience, Bill Maher is an unfamiliar name and it’s our job to introduce him to you.

So here goes:

Bill Maher is not new to making controversial remarks about minority groups and as Huffington Post puts it, he does good at defending his comments with his “anti-politically correct rhetoric“. The site records a time he compared British-Pakistani singer, Zayn Malik to the Boston Marathon bomber.

Maher’s career in comedy dates back to 1979 when he hosted comedy club show, Catch a Rising Star. After a 9-year stint as host of late night political talk show, Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, the Manhattan-born comedian set off as co-host and producer of Real Time in 2003.

For his recent gaffe, Maher apologized with these words, “Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show … Last night was a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive, and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”

But it looks like he’ll never own a spot in the good books of many Americans for a long time as this tweet sums up how most feel about him:
