What is the origin of your label?
It’s called SUTURAH but I spell it as Su2rah. It means clothing in Hausa.
What was the first piece of clothing you ever designed?
A dress
What are the fabrics you like working with?
85% of the time, African fabrics (prints).
Which international designer would you like to work with?
Jean Paul Gaultier
What matters to you most as a designer?
Customer satisfaction/excellence.
What are your accomplishments as a designer?
I’ve made dresses for Mbong Amata, two fashion shows and displaced in 180 magazine.
What inspires your designs?
African attires.
What are the problems you face as a designer in this part of the world?
Under pricing, lack of quality fabrics, etc.
How would you rate the Nigerian fashion industry?
Good.
If you were not a designer what would you have been?
A caterer or probably practice architecture.
Who are your favourite designers locally?
Jewel by Lisa and Lanre da-Silva.
Are you one of those who think government can support designers – and how?
Yes, through things like the YouWiN! initiative.
Where do you see your label in 10 years?
In New York, London, Milan, France and Dubai.
What do you say to aspiring designers?
Any body can make if they are sufficiently determined.
