Don’t touch it – Justice Adah says Unilag name stays

by Isi Esene

The suit filed by some UNILAG students and Alumni at the Federal High Court in Ikeja is enjoying favourable ruling one more time from Justice Stephen Adah who ordered that the UNILAG name should subsist pending the conclusion of hearing and final determination of the suit challenging the renaming of the school to Moshood Abiola University, Lagos.

This is definitely great news for the students who took to the streets in protest shortly after the name-change was announced in a May 29, 2012 address to the nation by President Goodluck Jonathan to mark the Democracy Day celebration.

Many stakeholders faulted the process with which the action was taken and others wondered “why UNILAG and not some other institution?”

Justice Adah restated the interim order following a request by the plaintiffs’ lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun (SAN) for an extension of the validity of the interim order. Counsel for the respondents in the suit however said the judge in his interim ruling had made the injunction validity period very clear to all parties involved.

The respondents are the University of Lagos, the Senate of the university, its Governing Council, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN); and the National Assembly.

Unilag students, #Winning.
