An angry mob almost lynched three policemen in Unguwar Kofar Dumi, Bauchi, when the officers rescued a suspected ritualist, who allegedly charmed a 15-year-old girl.

The ritualist reportedly touched the girl with a charm at about 11: 30 am on Tuesday, 26 August, which caused her to collapse.

Mallam Bashiru, an eyewitness said the suspect tried to make a run for it, once he realized the victim was unconscious, but he was stopped by youths who threatened to kill him, if he did not restore her to a conscious state.

Speaking further, he said the ritualist declined to revive the girl, which attracted more youths to the scene armed with various weapons, and started beating him, until elders of the community stepped in.

“When the elders came, they took him to the house of one of them for interrogation where he owned up to charming the girl and performed certain rituals that revived the girl. Instead of the elders handing him back to us, they called the police who came and took him away in their van,” he said.

Mallam Adamu Alin Bayi, the head of the area, confirmed the incident, saying they intervened to stop the irate youths from killing the suspected ritualist, adding that policemen and himself were also injured by the mob.
