EFCC arraign ex-Naval Chief, others over N600m fraud

A former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin on Tuesday was arraigned before Justice A. S Umar of the FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja.

The former Navy boss was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alongside two top former senior naval officers, Rear Admiral Bala Mshelia (rtd) and Rear Admiral Shehu Ahmadu (rtd) on a 4-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy.

The men were docked alongside Habour Bay International Limited.

According to the spokesperson of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren the naval chiefs are accused of allegedly buying a house worth N600 million from the account of Naval Engineering Services without the said purchase contract being captured in the budget.

The commission further said the first defendant (Vice Admiral Jibrin) used a private company owned by his family for documentation during the transfer of ownership of the property, thereby making him the buyer.

Uwujaren noted that the offence is in contravention of Section 26 (1) (b) and punishable under Section 22 (4) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Act 2000.

The defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
