Ex-convicts may soon lose national awards as bill passes first reading

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed for second reading an amendment seeking to withdraw national awards from those who have been convicted of crime.

Passing the motion, Ayodele Oladimeji said the bill will help strengthen the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“There is need for the law to be amended. This will strengthen the anti-corruption war of the government of the day,” he said.

“The awardee must be found guilty of any crime by a competent court of jurisdiction before the executive consider the stripping of such awards.”

Another lawmaker, Adamu Kamale said the bill will ensure award recipients live up to expectation.

The bill was passed for second reading after it was put to a voice vote by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
