ON A two-day working visit to Abuja, my client lodged me in Sheraton Hotel. All-expense-paid the stay was, but you can trust Corporate Nigeria to drown you in enough work so that you forget to enjoy yourself.

After checking in and walking past the lobby and waiting area into the lift, however, it began to seem like those were the best parts of the hotel. Goodbye Sheraton, welcome Kabulville.

I was checked into Room 1235. And broken furniture, control switches that didn’t work, a bed with a long strand of black hair, a standing lamp that had no plug, and a door that refused to shut without intense manipulation welcomed me. It was a 1235 experience indeed. I could endure the others, but not the door. I asked for a change of room.

Welcome to Room 509 – abode of broken furniture, falling tiles, a control switch that controls only itself, and a bathtub with stains; at least the door worked.

I ordered pizza at 11pm on my first night. It came almost raw, even the cheese had not melted. I had to send it back to the kitchen for proper cooking. I ordered simple rice and stew dish and the stew tasted like something that came from a drum. Does Sheraton cook stew once a year?

My only comfort was the global brand name. But surely that won’t bring me back. Sheraton Abuja needs some urgent renovation, that’s all I can say… And they need to fire the chef!
