From the Magazine: Excitement in the air – interview with TV personality, Efemena Tommy Adabamu

Efemena Tommy Adabamu is presenter and producer with Excite on TV

How did you get on TV?

I’ve always wanted to do TV. I went for screen test at Spice TV but I wasn’t called back. Much later, I was at home one evening and Denrele Edun asked me to follow him somewhere to see the owner of The Next Movie Star. He [Denrele] said he [Sola] was planning to start up a TV platform like E!. When we got there, they were arguing about celebrity lifestyle. I joined the argument, made my case and won. I guess I made an impression that day, because they called Denrele and said they would like me to work with them. Eventually, I got on board and it’s been fun ever since.

How long have you been in television?

Since June 25,2009.

Why television?

Well, TV came along and I went with it. It’s not as if I can’t or don’t want to do something else. I am also into PR and advertising. I just love the media.

Who do you look up to in the industry?

I admire my boss, Sola Fajobi a lot. He makes things happen from nothing. He is the first person that started a movie reality TV show, he is also the first person to do anything like Super Mum. I also respect those who have TV talk shows. It’s not easy to run. Most people see all the glamour but not the hard work behind everything. For people in my field, I admire Ryan Seacrest and Piers Morgan.

What are the unique challenges of being on TV in Nigeria?

I don’t know about other people, but for us (Excite on TV), it is a lot of work. We don’t play music back to back so we generate content from anything – even if the event we covered was completely boring. It’s pretty difficult doing that and scripting, voice over, editing and all. It’s also an issue to get celebrities to talk to you on the red carpet these days. They feel we praise them when we are there and then ‘flash’ them under fashion police.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

With God by my side, big things will definitely happen. Y!
