House investigation leaders threaten to subpoena White House for Comey tapes

Leaders of the House investigation into possible collusion between are threatening to subpoena the White House for recorded conversations of Trump with fired FBI Director James Comey.saying a Tweet from the president isn’t enough to clear things up, Politico reports. The House leaders will subpoena on the grounds that a mere tweet from Trump is not enough to clear things up.

In a joint statement, Reps. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said they needed to be sure if the White House has “recordings, memoranda, or other documents” and that they were ready to employ the use of a “compulsory process” to ensure a satisfactory response.

The White House has sent Conaway and Schiff a letter referring them to Trump’s Tweet that he did not have any recordings or tapes and did not make any himself, but the leaders were not satisfied. Their statement also read that they have sent the White House a letter asking that it “fully comply” with their request.

The statement read  “By only referring to the President’s statement, the White House’s letter stops short of clarifying for the Committee whether the White House has any responsive recordings, memoranda, or other documents”.

The threat of a bipartisan subpoena from Congress will put significant pressure on the White House to provide a more substantive answer about what was behind a Tweet from the president last month in which he hinted at the existence of tapes
