It hasn’t been one week since Jay-Z released his new album, 4.44 and it has already been certified platinum.
The 4.44 album is Hov’s 13th studio album and he received his 13th platinum plaque on Wednesday from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
According to XXLMag, Chairman and CEO of the RIAA, Cary Sherman said in a statement, “Props to Jay, he’s done it again. Another platinum adds to an already iconic career”.
No other rap or hip hop artist has more than 10 platinum albums hence making Jay-Z the first hip-hop artist to hit this status.
4.44 was released exclusively to Tidal and Sprint subscribers and so wasn’t available for physical sales. Jay-Z was able to achieve the 1 million sales requisite for platinum by getting subscribers to stream the 10 tracks on the album at least 1.5 billion times, an equivalent of the target.
The album will be made available on iTunes and Apple Music this week.
