Joeboy’s ascension in the music industry has been lovely to watch, breaking into a new stratosphere with 2019 pop hits like Baby and Beginning with such tender, boyish vocals, dominating multiple charts and radio. None of this could have happened without Mr Eazi’s brainchild emPawa Africa, an Africa-focused talent incubator that launched him into a deserved spotlight.

Following his debut EP Love and Light released in 2019, which showcased his talent in undeniable chops, the 23-year-old singer is looking towards working and releasing his debut album titled Somewhere Between Beauty and Magic in the foreseeable future. In a recent interview with Audiomack’s Ayomide Tayo, Joeboy discusses his music journey, his approach to songwriting, his disappointment about not bein able to tour the world after his EP was released due to the coronavirus pandemic.

One thing is sure, Joeboy is excited about his debut album. “I want them to experience happiness because the way the world is right now, there is so much negativity and so much sadness,” Joeboy says about his fans. “I want to bring some form of positivity through my music. I want people to listen to my album and be happy and excited.”

A huge part of Joeboy’s sound is how the lyrics are catch and effortless in equal measure. Describing his songwriting process: ”Most times, I write to instrumentals. I wrote “Nobody” when I heard the instrumental. Like I said, in my writing, I try to make my songs as relatable as possible. I think that’s one of the major ingredients of a hit song: it has to be something a lot of people from different backgrounds can relate to.”

A long way from Joeboy’s discovery covering Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You in 2017, his ascent seems unstoppable.
