Kemi Adeosun is confused and she probably doesn’t realise it

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun is the quintessence of all things confusion. Her lack of consistency is unimaginable, the type that leaves you dazed for seconds and with more questions on your mind than before you clicked on her story.

On 26th September, Kemi Adeosun’s name was on the headlines, most of them read: “I have no idea when recession will end”– Kemi Adeosun

48 hours later, on the 28th, headlines read: “We are already getting out of recession” – Kemi Adeosun

One can only wonder what happened within the space of two days that spinned Nigeria’s economic situation so hard for the narrative to change like that. Or maybe there wasn’t a miracle, we just have a finance minister who is so in tune with her spiritual self that she believes speaking positive words about Nigeria’s situation will get us out of the quagmire that we’re in. Or maybe she’s just confused. We would like to go with the latter. A number of Nigerians have honourably placed Kemi Adeosun in the same category as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed who has not exactly been straightforward with Nigerians since he assumed his position. That’s another interesting way to look at it but we’ll stick with the confusion theory.

These were her words on the 26th: “I don’t want to predict when we will get out of recession. It may take longer than we would like, but we will definitely get out of it. We are already seeing positive signs in agriculture and solid minerals and with what we are trying to do with other sectors, I am very sure we will get out of recession very soon.”

It’s amazing what one day can change in the life of a man, or in this case, a nation that is waist-deep in recession.

After an epiphany of sorts, Kemi Adeosun said on the 28th: “We are already getting out of recession because of the actions the Federal Government is taking.”

Is it just us or these statements are contradictory? We’re not too surprised though, she was the one who referred to the recession as “just a word”, then later retracted the statement. Nigerians demand explanations but the Minister of Finance needs to stick to a story, it’s rude to drag us in different directions the way she does.

The Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele on September 19th told newsmen that “the worst of the recession is over and by the fourth quarter of the year, it will be evident that we are moving out of the recession.” We assume fourth quarter ends in December. This narrative is entirely different from the previous two we were trying to comprehend.

Since we still don’t get it and probably won’t, let’s just move on with our lives and pretend we never heard from President Buhari’s intelligent, expert ministers.

  1. Nna mehn, you say the woman is confused because she said she cant make up her mind if the we are getting out of recession or not. Bros, let me ask, do you know when we will get out of recession? Am sure people would buy into all this that you have laid down, but fact is she know what she is doing and she has given us pointers on how we can get out of recession. The FG is doing all it can to get us out of recession. Now my question to you is this, what are you doing to get us out of recession? Local market men and women are complaining that people are not buy our locally made rice but prefer the imported once, manufacturers are also lodging the same complaints, why not write to encourage people to patronize themselves and stop wasting out time blasting a woman who is doing her best to help. Are you saying that you are perfect and know all?
