The Media Blog: Coke Studio is pretty good television

It’s a bit uneven, as can only be the case with a show whose success depends largely upon the chemistry between the acts headlining each episode.

The mash-ups don’t always work, either.

And some of the “cultural exchange” segments are just plain awkward.

But none of that is enough to really overshadow the high points.

Take, for example, the sheer inventiveness of this performance where the band has to create backing instrumentals for Falz and John Makini, live, on the spot, using their phones.

Or this one where they have to use coke bottles.

Not bad at all for something we’d previously only seen as an annoyance we couldn’t wait to skip on YouTube.
