National Assembly members reject Buhari’s dinner invitation

Members of the National Assembly have reportedly shunned a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari for undisclosed reasons.

The most likely of the reasons why the dinner was shunned however, would be the ongoing crisis rocking the Senate as its principal officers are to be tried for alleged forgery and corruption.

In the build up to the dinner, the caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the red chamber had announced that they would no longer support the efforts and agenda of President Buhari.

The senate had bitterly complained that the Executive arm of government was in cahoot with other forces to ensure that the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu, his deputy are silenced or imprisoned.

Saraki and Ekweremadu have been accused of changing the house rule book which aided their emergence as the leaders of the senate.

The senate, serious in its withdrawal of support for the president, on Wednesday suspended the screening of ambassadorial nominees over irregularities in the process of selecting them.

According to TheCable, few hours later, the lawmakers canceled the scheduled dinner with the President.

Buhari hosted service chiefs to a dinner on Monday and members of his cabinet on Tuesday but could not host the lawmakers due to the cancellation.

“Due to the crisis in national assembly, lawmakers have refused to honour the break-of-fast dinner with the president today,” a source told TheCable.

“They have just cancelled it. He met with ministers yesterday, today was suppose to be with the national assembly, tomorrow will be with judiciary while Friday will be with party chieftains, etc.”
