Ndani TV’s “Real Talk” is back for season three and we have forgotten how to be excited

Real talk

Guys, Ndani TV’s real talk just got green-lit for a third season and we have questionssssss.

Put bluntly, the only thing going for Ndani TV’s Real Talk so far is its youthful gloss. The show has largely preserved the restaurant aesthetic since its premiere in 2015, putting millennials in a cool joint while their conversations blandly ticks off topics on money, sex and relationships. One of the big criticisms of the show is that its ‘guests’ for each episode often are people who have no experience or no business talking about issues as delicate as a consent or even finances. Episodes often come across as being hashed out for their own sake, not to further any real conversations.

A huge part of Real Talk’s first season was fraught with staid, mediocre ideas and it came as no surprise when the show took a break, only to return in 2017 with an episode misinforming viewers on consent and rape. That said, I have no idea what’s going on with the show’s hosts, as Ndani TV keeps changing them per season in disorienting fashion.

Cornelia O’Dwyer hosted the first season until Nicole Asinugo was dispatched for the show’s sophomore offering. And now, winner of the MTV Base VJ Search in 2016 Olayinka Oladiran will preside over season three.

The just-released trailer is a snapshot of the show’s slate of guest appearances, notably MTV Base Shuga star Timini Egbuson and comedian EmmaOhMaGod. Egbuson assertively says something in the lines of “man of the house” and I had to recoil. Is it just me or is Egbuson becoming a kind of patriarchal poster boy? I loathed his character in MTV Base Shuga and there seem to be vestiges of that persona in this forthcoming season of Real Talk.

The show is slated to premiere July 11 at noon.
