The fragile peace being enjoyed in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is currently under threat and that threat is being coordinated by the man saddled with the management of sport activities in the country in the person of Mr. Solomon Dalung. The minister of sport who is expected to champion peace in the NFF has remained a hindrance to progress in the NFF since his assumption of office. His poor handling of the NFF crisis few months ago which made him to mislead the federal government in connivance with the Attorney General of the Federation to ignore FIFA’s demands that the NFF resolve its internal issues. Their actions nearly earned the country a FIFA ban. Despite all these missteps, the NFF has managed to forge ahead but Dalung seems to be disinterested in the peace process.
Solomon Dalung had put his weight behind Chris Giwa to run the NFF, but Giwa was banned from participating in FIFA activities worldwide because of corruption. Dalung was well aware of this ban when he continued to promote his friend as a viable option for the NFF presidency. His latest attempt at truncating the peace in NFF must not be allowed by President Muhammadu Buhari as it could damage his international reputation. The NFF on September 20, 2018 held its election where Amaju Pinnick was re-elected for another term of four years after defeating his closest rivals Aminu Maigari and Taiwo Ogunjobi with thirty four votes.
The election which had the representatives of both FIFA and CAF and was adjudged free, fair and credible by all aspirants has been rejected by Dalung. According to him, the Federal Government will not recognize the election as there is an existing case in a Nigerian court against the board that conducted the election. According to Dalung, the committee is not existing. However, his position contravenes the code of the world football body whose issues can only be resolved by the FIFA court of Arbitration.
Already, condemnations has trailed Dalung position on NFF but it is important the President call Dalung to order. He should not truncate the fragile peace in NFF.
