Opinion: The essence of Christmas is reaching out to others

by Kingsley Ahanonu

Nothing is new about this period, some might reason and so, it does no worth the revving excitements. It’s another of the many periods we’ve so become used to, hence to which nothing is so spectacular to experience that we’ve not?

The whole space is sizzling, everyone seems radiating with excitement. An impressing presence is wobbling, raving hearts and situations; and we all know what it is.

The feel that has caught our air is not a new thing especially for adults; even among the children, it has become an occurrence they’ve lived to know; if not as many times, it would be twice, but definitely  something that’s been witnessed.

We could however spare the newly borns, like my little nephew, who understandably are aliens to the flair for the very reason that they were not opportune to be in the previous memorabilia. For this group, we could allow the benefits to be ecstatic, surprised, and all the emotional wagging that may swirl. It’s their first, the emotions should be quite expected, considering man’s wowness to phenomena
unexperienced.

This Christmas we’ve known very well for what it is; its rudiment has, for as the many times we’ve experienced it, been stressed for our understanding. It’s been preached and expounded as the period when the very focus of Christendom is celebrated; that time the real value of humanity is aptly expressed.

We’ve come to know even without being reminded that Christmas is the
remembrance of the divine reincarnation. In the roaring knowledge for
which many pride to have of this period, it is rather ridiculous that not equitably these many express a full grasp of what they claim to know; the number falls woefully as to how many of us really understand the very crux of the charm exciting us and that has formed a very significant figment of our living.

It’s important for everyone to reflect on this and answer it ourselves, individually. The season might be hackneyed, but each time it calls, it reminds us of an undying message; we must give sight.

How do we personally see this yuletide? Is it yet another of beautiful times for celebration and shindigs all the way as those before; the right moment to flaunt and display acquired wealth: to shop for new arrivals: clothing, cars, houses, etc?

Do we see it as one of the normal routine of sacred events in the church’s calendar which we, as Christians should participate in.

Nothing is new about this period, some might reason and so, it does no worth the revving excitements. It’s another of the many periods we’ve so become used to, hence to which nothing is so spectacular to experience that we’ve not?

But yes there’s something spectacular about it we seem to miss out always; something special. It’s important we fully appreciate the utmost basis and purpose of this period of time in Christendom. Christmas by its name and postulations has made bare to us the central focus of its presence; of Christ’s impact and God’s gift of reconciliation.

We must critically explore the many new avenues it provides for sober reflections and spiritual re-examinations. A time for re-assessment and a time to aid in the salvific and life transforming purpose of the period.

Xmas might have been to us the hackneyed, tasteless stuff. But in this yet another Christmas, we’re reminded of the need to live out the message it provides us with. We are called to be willing instruments for the transmission of the reconciliation and peace it comes with, and to experience the good wills of it brings. Each of us is called upon to reflect on the aspirations of this year’s celebration.

To him who thinks it’s yet another time for ostentation, the message is for you to remember the Jesus in the manger, who is aptly incarnated in the flesh and dwelling around you; in the poor and homeless on the streets, the orphans and vulnerable children in the orphanages; the sick and other helpless fellows. The echoing call is for you to give them succour and make part of the whole funfair!

To the one feeling rejected and despaired, and thinks it does not worth celebrating, the Christmas bell comes jingling with the sound of hope-restoration; to bring back happiness into every dispirited heart; it comes with great tidings of joy, and glory to all mankind. And with it, comes a great light to illuminate every darkened soul.

To the broken and struggling house-holds, to the war-torn and crisis-ridden nations; to the confused leadership, lacking focus and direction, it has brought with it peace and the serenity which only the Prince of peace could offer. And to all the brokenhearted and the distressed, comfort and relief.

The purpose of Christmas was and still remains to bless the world by restoring the once broken relationship between God and man; the result of divine intervention. This Christmas has come to re-ignite that hope of salvation. There is no reason for the rise in criminality and other wicked acts that the yuletide has come to be reckoned with. These tares are subtle means of the evil one whose plans has being to dissuade mankind from the reason of the season, which is Christ, love expressed. We must stay clear!

Merry Xmas!
