The police in Lagos stumbled upon a curious discovery after they found a supposed lunatic with a pistol and ammunition.
The suspect was apprehended by the security officials while allegedly trying to hide the weapons.
He was arrested in the Egbeda area of the state and is currently being interrogated by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Nigerian Eye reports:
Eye-witnesses said the ‘mad man’ had been loitering around the area for two months. However, a curious passer‑by was said to have suspected him when he saw him wrapping an object with a rag.
The ‘mad man’ was said to have thereafter started looking sideways , apparently to ascertain whether he was being watched, before he dumped the content wrapped with the rag inside a container in the dump site.
The passer‑by was said to have alerted others who immediately rushed to the dump site, only to discover that the ‘object’ was a double barrel pistol and four cartridges, consequent upon which he (mad man) was apprehended and handed over to Policemen at Gowon Estate.
Police sources at the station told newsmen that during interrogation, the man’s speech was incoherent.
Sources said: “We tried to find out where he got the weapons from but he gave meaningless response. He was later transferred to the SCID where investigation is ongoing.
“Part of the investigation will include taking him to the psychiatric hospital to ascertain his mental stability before further investigation.”
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, failed as her phone rang severally without response. But a senior police officer at the Lagos State Command confirmed the arrest, saying thorough investigations would be carried out to unravel how the suspect came about the arms.
