In Kaduna, pupils ‘abandon school’ after eating government’s free meal

The Kaduna state Government, on Monday, disclosed that primary school pupils in the state abandon their classrooms after eating the free meal provided for them by the state government.

The students are said to have formed a habit of leaving school immediately after eating on the pretense of looking for water to drink.

Shehu Adamu, the  state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, told reporters in Kaduna that the situation was distressing for the state government.

Adamu urged parents to ensure that their children do not return home until time for schools to close,  “otherwise the aim would be defeated.”

While noting that the free meal program was introduced by the state government to encourage school enrollment, attendance and retention, the commissioner stated that: “The main goal of the school feeding programme is to attract out-of-school children to school and keep them in class for them to acquire education and better their lives.”

“We will not allow a situation where children will just come to school and leave the moment they finished eating their meals; if it is about water, we have already asked parents to provide water for their children.”

“Therefore, parents have a responsibility of ensuring that the children do not only come to school on time, but remain in school till closing hours.”
