Rick Santorum Gives Up – Suspends US presidential campaign

by Hauwa Gambo

After insisting for many months that he will not give up his mandate as the “true conservative” in the race, US Republican candidate Rick Santorum, has finally ended his campaign.

The former Pennsylvania senator “suspended” his campaign, a source close to the campaign confirmed to ABC news.

Interestingly, the news comes the day after Santorum’s 3-year-old daughter Bella was released from the hospital — her second trip this year. She suffers from a rare and often fatal disorder called Trisomy 18.

“This was a time for prayer and tohgout over this past wekend,” he said. “Just like it was when we decided to get into this race… we were very concerned about our role of being the best kids we possibly could to our kids.”

According to him, he balanced his desire to be a good father with his desire to do something good for the country. And he mentioned Bella and her condition as one of the reasons he ran – to look out for Americans likee her, who he said are “left behind.”

“While this presidential campaign is over for me, we are going to continue fighting for those voices,” Santorum told a rather quiet crowd in Gettysburg.

It was a stark contrast to the boisterous crowds that have greeted his unusual campaign – including his surprise position as frontrunner at several points towards the long campaign.

With Newt Gingrich suspending his campaign, the coast is officially clear for Mitt Romney to pick up the Republican flag.
