The rainy season is here again, has the government learnt from its past mistakes?

rainy season, rains, NIMET

Every year the rainy season is highly anticipated by Nigerians for two major reasons, farming and also the shift to cooler weather. However, the rainy season which is a blessing can also turn out to be a curse for some. Flooding, erosion and landslides have become a common occurrence as Nigeria moves towards a highly urbanised society threatening lives and properties if they not properly anticipated and mitigated.

In 2018 the rains have already claimed its first casualties in Taraba. According to news reports, five individuals were killed in Jalingo, the state’s capital when a mast belonging to a telecommunication company fell on some persons during a rainstorm. This accident which claimed the lives of some individuals is a strong reminder that the government needs to educate and protect the citizens from further mishaps.

Also, the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) which is saddled with the responsibility of public sensitisation often abandons its duties after the rainy season. The failure of NIMET was evident in the Taraba attack as its sensitization would have alerted the victims to the dangers of staying in an unsafe location during a rainstorm. However, the rains are not here fully as what we have now is a tip of what to come, but the government can do its best to prevent the loss of lives and properties before the rain fully starts.

All drainage channels should be emptied to prevent flooding activities while man-made structures preventing the free flow of water should be removed to prevent surface runoffs. The rainy season should be a blessing, not a death sentence.
