Top 5 Stories Of The Day | Airline Operators Back Minister’s No-fly Order on KWAM 1

The Airline Operators of Nigeria have supported the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, instructing the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to place Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) on a no-fly list. Keyamo warned that any airline that ignores the order risks losing its operating licence.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has also petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the incident involving KWAM 1 and domestic airline ValueJet.

The August 5, 2025, incident reportedly disrupted standard operational procedures and raised concerns over passenger conduct and airline safety measures. Authorities say the investigation will determine the appropriate actions to be taken.

FG dismisses 15 correctional officers, Demotes 59 for indiscipline

The Federal Government has removed 15 officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) from service and reduced the ranks of 59 others over various offences, including misconduct and breach of discipline.

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), operating under the Ministry of Interior, stated that it reviewed 224 cases of misconduct after detailed investigations and deliberations.

In a statement, NCoS Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, explained that the matters were forwarded to the board by the Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee (BDGPC) following thorough investigations carried out in line with due process.

WAEC temporarily blocks access to 2025 WASSCE results over technical issues

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has temporarily restricted access to its results portal for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, following public outrage over technical problems.

In a statement, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC’s National Office, Moyosola Adesina, explained that the Council discovered system bugs during a post-release review of the results. This prompted the suspension of access to the result checker portal.

WAEC advised candidates who had already viewed their results to revisit the portal from Friday to see the updated versions. The Council also defended its serialisation method for Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics, adding that the post-release quality checks had revealed glitches in its backend systems.

A medical aircraft crashed into a residential building in Ruiru, near Nairobi, on Thursday, killing six people and leaving two others critically injured. Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed that the dead included the pilot, three passengers, and two residents of the house.

The plane had departed Wilson Airport at 2:17 pm local time and was heading to Somaliland when it went down shortly after 3:00 pm. Authorities reported that the two injured victims were on the ground when the crash occurred.

This incident happened a day after a Ghanaian military helicopter crash killed all eight people on board, including the country’s defence and environment ministers, drawing fresh attention to aviation safety concerns in the region.

Tinubu government urges balanced Criticism amid economic hardship

The Nigerian government has acknowledged the current economic hardship but cautioned against exaggerating the situation. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare addressed comments from opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, urging them and citizens to be fair in their criticism.

Dare, in a post on X, stressed that the administration is not trying to silence Nigerians despite the prevailing challenges. He noted that President Bola Tinubu’s government welcomes feedback but expects it to be constructive and balanced.

According to him, rebuilding the nation requires collective responsibility and a commitment to finding solutions, not just amplifying the country’s struggles. He said this approach is what the president expects from both citizens and well-wishers of Nigeria.
