Following the conclusion of the Republican Alabama Senate special primary election on August 15 which saw former Alabama’s Chief Judge, Roy Moore and former Alabama state Attorney General, Luther Strange emerge as candidates, the duo are scheduled for a special election on September 26.
- Trump’s mission
With regards to the next week election, President Trump who has not hidden his preference for the incumbent Alabama Senator will travel to the cotton state where he won by a large margin in the 2016 presidential election on Friday to canvass votes for the former Alabama Attorney General.
Trump who announced his travel plan through a tweet wrote, “Looking forward to Friday night in the Great State of Alabama. I am supporting “Big” Luther Strange because he was so loyal & helpful to me!”
- Trump has a huge support base
Strange came second behind Roy Moore in the August primary but would be hoping to win the special election especially with the support of President Trump, VP Mike Pence, senate and the GOP establishment to continue in the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions following his appointment as Attorney General of the US on February 8.
- A reward for loyalty
Trump’s support of strange is not a mystery, its a reward for loyalty. Strange had long associated himself with Donald Trump, saying that he wants “his agenda passed” and that “couldn’t be more honoured” to be given Trump’s endorsement. As of August 2017, Strange voted in line with Trump’s position 91.7% of the time.
