Trump’s billionaire ally, Mercer to donate $300,000 to stop Senator Flake’s re-election

A strong ally of President Trump and one of the most generous political benefactors is earmarking a six-figure donation to a super Political Action Committee (PAC) devoted to unseating Sen. Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican who has been a fierce critic of Donald Trump, Politico reports.

Robert Mercer, a billionaire who was closely involved in Trump’s rise and helped to bankroll his 2016 campaign, will contribute $300,000 to a super PAC supporting former state Senator, Kelli Ward, who will be challenging Flake in a Republican primary next year.

The move is a sure sign that Trump’s political machine is preparing to take on Flake, who has made his distaste for the President no secret. The White House has including Kelli Ward met with state Treasurer Jeff DeWit and former state GOP Chairman Robert Graham, two Republicans who are also gearing to challenge Flake, who refused to endorse Trump in the 2016 campaign and called on him to withdraw after the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Trump was heard boasting about groping women.

Flame in his new book, “Conscience of a Conservative” argued that the GOP is in denial about the Trump presidency and blames the party for his rise. He had also in recent times launched a national TV tour in which he emphasized his case that his party has taken the wrong course.

Trump, irritated by the Senator’s jabs at one point said that he would be willing to spend $10 million of his own money to defeat Flake in the 2018 primary, and this reflected during a press briefing last week where White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to rule out the possibility that the president would help finance an anti-Flake primary effort.

“Sen. Flake would serve his constituents much better if he was less focused on writing a book and attacking the president” and more involved in “passing legislation,” Huckabee reiterated.
