Chidinma Umeh, popularly known as That Igbo Chick is the beauty blogger and fashion enthusiast who became a staple feature on many playlists after Bella Naija regularly reproduced her content on their site.
To say that she was different than many other beauty bloggers would be an understatement. Her chosen name, That Igbo Chick not only set her aside as unique, it also announced her determination to only show off looks that compliment the Nigerian skin, weather and general style.
Soon enough, her turban wearing morphed into a series inspired by Ankara prints and so she created numbered looks inspired by whichever Ankara head tie she was wearing in each video. It was an instant hit. Both on her YouTube page and on Bella Naija.
All the while, Chidinma continued to pursue her MSc degree in the United Kingdom as well as run her That Igbo Chick blog which she started in 2011.
She was also a regular on fashion and beauty sites like Style Vitae.
In 2014, she was a speaker on the Beauty Unmasked panel organized by Bella Naija and Ndani TV at that year’s Social Media Week in Lagos where everything beauty related as it pertains to Nigerian women was thrashed.
With over 2 million views and over 500,000 subscribers on YouTube and a co-ordinated website to go with it, Chidinma really could weave her traffic into whatever profitable venture she chooses yet we haven’t from her in almost a year.
Her last youtube video was posted in December and she hasn’t been featured in any Bella Naija posted in almost that long too. Even her Instagram was last updated on January 23rd.
To explain her YouTube and Instagram silence at the time, Chidinma put up a post on her website explaining that she’s been busy rounding up her M.Sc programme as well as planning her return to Nigeria. That definitely places her in the country even though there hasn’t been any more updates.
With a graduate degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and all that fashion, beauty, public speaking and even writing skill, we do hope that Igbo chick is somewhere planning a huge takeover of the industry soon.
