There’s an important aspect of female friendships that the trailer for Rule No. 1 highlights: that the bond between women isn’t eternally concrete when you throw a man into the picture. Pop culture has portrayed this to the death. Brandy and Monica’s The Boy is Mine, hello? Though both singers are friends in real life (well, then), that 1998 duet and its accompanying music video upended the way we saw friendships between women.
In Rule No. 1, the trailer presents the logline “sisters before misters,” the crisply invented female equivalent to the bros before hoes code. The romantic comedy brings on Keira Hewatch, who cultivated fame from starring in the 2011 film Two Brides and a Baby, and the Desperate Housewives-esque television series Lekki Wives. She plays the best friend to Chinonso Young, whose acting portfolio leans towards TV projects like My Mum and I, and the MNET Africa soap Tinsel.
Young was also on Lekki Wives, which supplies Rule No. 1 with a harvested bond between her and Hewatch. But their friendship is tested when a man comes into their lives, though at separate times. Played by Bucci Franklin (The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, Bambitious, Las Gidi Vice), we see the fresh dynamics between the women and how it threatens their sister code.
