#YNaijaOnTheScene: ‘Keke Marwa’ live on stage & 6 other things you missed at the Music Meets Runway 2014

by Chinwe Okafor

This year’s Music Meets Runway has come and gone after several months of getting the awareness into our subconscious. The event which took place at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos with a fantastic line up of performances and fashion display.

Regardless of the cliche late start, here are the things you missed at the event if you weren’t there.

Cultural display.

Although they started late, what took away the angst of many was the beautiful disposition of culture to introduce the participating countries for this year’s edition of Music Meets runway. Four countries were slated for a showcase and each country had their own culture shown to the audience.

D’banj gimmick.

So a couple of people, say 8 boys, came on stage (as part of the Pre-show performance) and all they had on was nothing but towel and sunglasses. Without much effort, one could guess who they trying to mimic. The song that followed after [D’banj’s what is the koko] confirmed our expectations and for the first time that night having waited over three hours for the event to start, the audience laughed.

Uncle Ben of Project Fame pulls a Fela.

Ive heard he en masses talent but i didnt think it was this much. Ben Ogbeiwi took to the stage and performed Fela’s ‘Water no get enemy’ and i was impressed at his take, so was the audience. It felt like we had Fela in our midst once again. But the thought of Fela at a fashion show, leaves little to the mind to wonder.

DJ Cuppy on the wheels of steel.

Femi Otedola’s DJ daughter, Ife popularly known as DJ Cuppy, gave the crowd a little shake of the body when she mounted the stage and began playing mixes from her mixtape. Her dancers as well brought energy to the whole synergy and it was interesting seeing Cuppy do the shoki dance.

Mai Atafo’s snooze fest.

Lord Jesus! If it wasn’t for the season and the spirit of Christmas, my thoughts concerning this is so ugly it could be held against me. What the heck were the organisers thinking stretching that aspect of the event? It is bad enough we were pressed for time having began late, then comes the competition segment Mai anchored. As far as I’m concerned the only lively people were the ones directly related to the competitors. A lot of snooze fest was going on around me, regardless.

Wizkid’s performance.

Wizkid, my favourite act for the night came on stage and did what he does best- make people happy. He performed songs off his album while the fashion designer paired with him showcased. It was interesting to watch.

Keke Marwa on stage.

Yes, believe it or not, it managed to get atop the stage and guess who came out of it? I didn’t think so too- Dammy Krane. He performed his new hit track, ‘Amin’ and he did get a little emotional when he knelt down on the stage to prophesy some positive words to people. Might have spotted a tear.
