The 4-year old daughter in Aso Rock and 4 other things we learnt from Aisha Buhari today

This morning, the ladies of TVC’s Your View held an interview with Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of the President of Nigeria. Interestingly, they didn’t make any reference to #TheOtherRoom, confirming that we have sufficiently moved on from that.

The ladies –Morayo Afolabi-Brown, Uwa Salem, Jumoke Alawode, Tope Odigie and new mom, Nimah – had a number of interesting questions for the wife of the President. Here are a few interesting things to note about Aisha Buhari that you most likely didn’t know before:

How she handles her pet projects

Much of the interview revolved around the projects being chaperoned by the wife of the President. From what she’d do to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the projects to how she runs the projects.

“I monitor activities of my pet project from my bedroom” Mrs Buhari said when asked about the day to day running of the projects she has initiated. She also intimated that her Future Assured project doesn’t receive direct payments from members of the public. According to her, sponsors pay directly to the beneficiaries’ accounts once her team estimated how much funds will be needed for any single project.

She has a 4-year old daughter

She says that she adopted her step daughter’s baby after the former died leaving a two-day old child. The baby is four years old now we learnt and has been with the first lad as her adopted child since the death.

Zulai, the first daughter of President Buhari died in 2012 after delivering her baby at the Nasara Hospital in Kaduna. Fondly, Aisha Buhari shared stories of how the baby will insist on following her to work every morning.

Weirdly, if this baby is the first lady’s adopted daughter, what does it make her to the President. Daughter or grand-daughter? Talk about blurring the lines.

Did You Know? The wife of the President exercises at least 30 minutes daily. On her work out regime she said she either walks or runs. Obviously someone among the Your View ladies has been watching a lot of Netflix’s House of Cards because the follow up question was whether her security detail follows her on these runs.

She also disclosed her beauty secret as the result of sticking to a healthy eating regime: vegetables and fruits people!

“Women just want to be treated nicely”

When Jumoke asked her about her thoughts on gender equality, the wife of the President wasted no breath in answering: “men and women are not the same, all we ask is to be treated nicely …Women are there to support men”.

Financial independence is the solution to domestic violence against women

According to Aisha Buhari, fear is what makes women stay in abusive homes. The fear of the unknown – how to survive without the abusive partner. She believes that the acquisition of skills and entrepreneurial know-how by all women will keep these fears at bay and in turn reduce financial dependence of the men who abuse them.
