AGF pledges to manage treasury prudently

The Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) Ahmed Idris, has pledged that the nation’s treasury under his watch will be prudently and transparently managed.

Idris disclosed this when members of the Civil Society of Nigeria, an umbrella body representing over 25 civil society organisations in the country, visited the Treasury House to congratulate him on his appointment as the new AGF.

He thereby urged the CSOs in the country to collaborate with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in its resolve to fight corruption at all levels of government by reporting individuals or organisations engaged in corrupt practices.

In a statement from the AGF office on Sunday, Idris said that civil societies should act as whistle-blowers by reporting all forms of corrupt practices witnessed in the system, noting that it should be done objectively without fear or favor.

“No society will develop if it indulges in any form of corruption; and as a nation, if we do not imbibe the culture of good governance, transparency, accountability and strict compliance to rules and regulation stipulated in the relevant documents guiding the nation, we cannot reach our destination as a nation,” Idris said.

The AGF gave an assurance that the nation’s treasury under his watch would be prudently and transparently managed to ensure that the change promised by the President positively reflected in the lives of Nigerians.

Also in a meeting with executive members of the Association of the National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Federal Capital Territory branch, Idris said the decline in the revenue of the government as a result of the fall in the oil prices was capable of affecting the business of governance if not properly managed.

He called for a more innovative, efficient and prudent management of the available resources, tasking ANAN members, who are controllers of funds in the civil service, to see themselves as critical stakeholders in the Buhari administration.

Idris pledged his commitment to upholding the professional ethics of the body in the discharge of his duty.
