Genevieve, Omotola, Funke Akindele in 7 of the most anticipated movies of 2012

by Wilfred Okiche

It is a new year and while Nollywood is still congratulating itself for decent outings like ‘The Return of Jenifa’ and ‘Tango with me’ last year, 2012 is shaping up to be even more exciting as a slew of potential blockbusters are all primed to hit the big screens.

We bring you 7 of the year’s most anticipated films.

I’ll take my chances

Coming from the stable of Emem Isong’s Royal Arts Academy, this dance drama starring Ini Edo was premiered last year but is set to be released widely this year. Joseph Benjamin was the breakout leading man last year, could this be the year of former Mr Nigeria, Brian Okwara?

Phone Swap

Two years ago, Kunle Afolayan changed the game with ‘The Figurine’, a supernatural thriller that garnered impressive reviews and broke box-office records. He returns this year with  a romantic comedy about two strangers who accidentally exchange phones after a casual meeting. Stars Nse Ikpe Etim, Joke Silva and Chika Okpala (Chief Zebrudaya of ‘New Masquerade’ fame.)

Maami

Funke Akindele stars as the titular character in director Tunde Kelani’s upcoming feature about a mother who will do anything for her son. Will she replicate the massive success of ‘The Return of Jenifa’?

Family on Fire

Tade Ogidan has been off the radar for some time now, but hopefully, the director of ‘Diamond Ring’ and ‘Dangerous Twins’ will make a comeback with his latest offering, ‘Family on Fire.’ Starring Shola Sobowale, Saheed Balogun and Segun Arinze, the movie tells the story of a family torn apart when a devious lad attempts to use his mother as a drug courier.

Ties that bind

This ensemble drama stars Hollywood actress Kimberly Elise, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Ghanian AMAA winner Ama K. Abebrese. A moving story of three women who find themselves and each other while building a shelter after they are each affected by tragedy.

The Meeting

Rita Dominic and Nse Ikpe Etim are sizzling in this engaging tale of corruption, red tape and bureaucracy directed by Mildred Okwo.

Weekend Getaway

The details of this one are not too clear yet but from the stills, we can see that Emem Isong has gathered together, half of the Nollywood A-list for this romantic comedy about, well, a weekend getaway. Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Ini Edo and Monalisa Chinda are just some of the big names attached to this project.
