Africa Cup of Nations: Nigeria’s dream dashed by Egypt

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will not participate in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations for the second successive time after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Egypt on Tuesday.

Going into Tuesday’s match, Nigeria had a chance to nick a qualification ticket if they could win the match in Alexandria thanks to the withdrawal of Chad.

However The Super Eagles were outplayed by the Pharaohs at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt as they had no shot on target on the night.

The Egyptians threatened the Nigerian backline with their swift counter-attacking moves, nevertheless Carl Ikeme’s last minute replacement Daniel Akpeyi kept Nigeria in the game until a Ramadan Sobhy deflected goal in the 65th minute blew away Nigeria’s chance.

While Egypt return to the continental show-piece after missing out on 3 successive tournaments, Nigeria would need to wait till Cameroon 2019 to reach the Africa Cup of Nations.
