One prepared to be president, the other? Well, we’re not sure | Here are the winners and losers from the U.S. debate

Presidential look

As per our style, we will not let the U.S. presidential debate fly by without bringing you the winners and losers from the night.

This is not the most difficult task as both candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump had their wins and losses coming.

Let’s get right on it:

WINNERS

Hillary Clinton: Without an element of bias, the Democratic candidate took all the shine at the first debate, before the U.S. general elections, last night. If you think we’re wrong, you might want to take a quick look at the polls. It calls for no explaining, the numbers speak for themselves.

Hillary Clinton dressed in a red trouser suit brought on a confidence that was fired, so obviously by preparedness. It had been reported earlier that Clinton had been busy doing a lot of “homework, research and rehearsals”.

Even Trump admitted that she had stayed at home instead of flying around to states like Detroit and Philadelphia.

It was in her retort to that statement that Clinton showed him she’s made of winning material. She said, “I did prepare for the debate but you know what else I prepared for? To be president.”

If you know a better way to win a debate than this, please stand up.

The split screen: For everyone who livestreamed the debate, the split-screen viewing format was the perfect way to keep an eye on both candidates and still view public reactions beneath, as they rolled in. Few times when the moderator spoke, the camera was on him but ultimately, we did not miss any detail (body language, facial expressions, mannerisms etc) thanks to the split screen.

LOSERS

Donald Trump: They say if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. But beyond his unpreparedness, Donald Trump showed up at the debate more as a businessman than a politician and one who never learns from his mistakes.

It’s safe to conclude that he doesn’t give a hoot about all things we worry about on his behalf. He’s still racist, still a misogynist, still incoherent and still doesn’t care about details.

Opponent, Hillary Clinton made a few points concerning Trump’s failure to release his tax returns.

She accused him of not being rich and charitable as he claims and reminded the audience that Trump had only paid federal income taxes for few years when he had to show proof of payment to state authorities. At that moment, Trump interjected, “That makes me smart”.

Here’s a man who takes pride in his dubious dealings.

Summarily, Donald Trump did not give his best performance at this first debate and he’s blamed it on the microphone he used. He says next time, he’ll use his personal microphone. Another flop!

Lester Holt: The NBC presenter and debate moderator came after Trump at the debate, in the most palpable manner. He was biased in his line of questioning and cut off Trump most of the time while he spoke.

According to the rules, a moderator is only supposed to ask questions and not fact-check but Holt did a bit of fact-checking Trump but never Hillary.

While Holt riddled Trump with controversial questions about tax returns, stop and frisk as well as his opponent’s stamina, Hillary got fairer questions.

Her long-standing email scandal did not come up, neither did questions about her foundations.

Generally, Holt was fair on Hillary Clinton and it was too obvious. All this must have been why Trump shunned Holt in the most awkward way by not honouring him with a handshake, that came almost as an afterthought.
