According to the statistics from the training of drivers by Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) which has trained about 65,000 drivers since August 2009, about 22 percent or 14,300 Lagos drivers were discovered to be partially blind.

This was revealed by the  Chief Executive Officer CEO, (LASDRI), Ayodeji Oyedokun while speaking to Vanguard Newspapers on the activities of the institution since its establishment of the institution in  2007 and commencement of operation in August 25, 2009.

He said before operation started in the institution, various researches were carried out which showed human errors were the major causes  75 percent road accidents.

See statistics of trained drivers as well as detected defects by LASDRI Optometrist below:

– Out of the 65,000 of drivers tested, 22 percent (approximately, 14,300 drivers) were found to be suffering from eye defects, such as myopia and were later referred to ophthalmologists for corrective measure.

— And 99.2 per cent of drivers with eye defects were males, while 1.8 percent were females.

– 1.8 per cent of the detected defects were myopic (short sighted) while 12.9 percent were pre-myopic while 3.3 percent are found to be long sighted.

Mr Oyedokun said they have established a relationship with National Union of Road Transport Workers,(NURTW) to train drivers of different types of vehicles at training centers in Lagos, also advising motorists round  Lagos state to have regular eye check-ups.
