Protesters storm National Assembly, demand resignation of Minister of Education

Over 2,000 protesters have besieged the entrance of the National Assembly.

The protesters, under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society Groups on Wednesday, February 17 took the to the streets of Abuja to register their dissatisfaction with the sacking of 13 Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

The protesters, upon reaching the National Assembly blocked the entrance and demanded for the resignation of the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu.

The Director-General of the group, Bassey Etuk declared at the protest that the removal of the 13 Vice-Chancellors and their replacement with people who are predominantly from the North is a violation of the Federal Character.

One of the placards carried by the protesters read “Six Professors were taken from Bayero University, Kano as replacement… Haba! Why?”

The protesters were heard chanting, “Adamu must go”, “reinstate the sacked VCs now” and “Nigeria needs a better administrator in the Education Ministry”, among others.

In the thick of the protest, a petition to Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara was received by the National Assembly’s Deputy Sergeant-At-Arms, Dennis Maaji.

The group stated that the minister “doesn’t seem to understand the working of University system and administration,” and gave him 48 hours to reinstate sacked the VCs and terminate his own appointment.

Etuk further revealed that the group would contest the sack of the VCs in court as their 5-year tenures had not yet elapsed.
