The #BringBackOurGirls campaigners gathered at the Unity Fountain in Abuja were earlier today attacked by men who reportedly beat up journalists, confiscated their cameras and destroyed chairs in the full glare of security men.
The Unity Fountain location was reportedly invaded by a group of women dressed in red who were bent on turning the sit out into a noisy marketplace.
Reports from those present at the protest say the crowd appeared to be ‘rented’ but no one could ascertain who their sponsors are.
“The attackers acted as if they were on drugs. Some of them were wearing red shirts with the inscription, #ReleaseOurGirlsNow,” an eyewitness said.
Several citizens led by the former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili have staged a sit out since April 30 to protest the abduction of over 230 schoolgirls from the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok and the seemingly lethargic reaction of the FG to effect their rescue for over one month.
