Anyone would have bet that Donald Trump’s choice at the French Presidential polls would have been Marine Le Pen despite the anti-establishment similarities that he shares with President-elect, Emmanuel Macron. Both had carved names for themselves outside of politics only to send shock ripples out into the world by gunning for the number office in their respective countries with as little governance experience as possible.
[In case you missed it: Emmanuel Macron has been elected French President!]
Marine Le Pen, on the other hand, campaigned as though she tore a leaf out of Donald Trump’s winning handbook. She wanted to give the power back to the French people, close borders, cut ties with the EU – essentially Make France Great Again!
However, with a 66% lead in the polls, Emmanuel Macron, a 39-year-old ambitious leader won the French elections. And Trump has congratulated the French President-elect:

Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France. I look very much forward to working with him!

Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary also put out a brief statement to congratulate the French people:
“We congratulate President-elect Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election. We look forward to working with the new President and continuing our close cooperation with the French government.”
Why is this important considering the fact that it is routine for world leaders to congratulate any winner under these circumstances?
Because this is President Trump! He could have “unleashed his sweet Twitter handle” on Macron if he so wished. In fact, he almost did.
Another terrorist attack in Paris. The people of France will not take much more of this. Will have a big effect on presidential election!

Last month the US president posted the tweet above in response to the Champs-Elysee attack. His theory: that the attack was going to have a “big effect” on the presidential election. Later in his AP interview, Trump explicitly stated that he thought the Paris attack would “probably help” Le Pen. While he never really went as far as to publicly endorse Marine the way Obama did Macron last week Thursday he did say she was “strongest on borders, and she’s the strongest on what’s been going on in France”.
