When Mohammed Gudaji, member of the House of Representatives, reminded President Muhammadu Buhari of his campaign promise of providing free education on Wednesday, many would have hoped it was a noble, selfless call.
But no, it’s far from that.
Gudaji, who represents Kazaure federal constituency, only issued the reminder ‘so that parents will stop taking their children to private schools’.
Not once was Mohammed Gudaji, quoted saying anything about the poor parents who take their children to public schools.
Not once did he talk about the completely downtrodden Nigerians who cannot even afford to send their children to any school.
Lawmaker Gudaji was only concerned about the well-to-do, and the way proprietors of private schools charge high school fees, while failing to provide the required education for children.
All he said was: “As you might be aware, things will be too much on our President as such he may likely forget with this vital promise he made of providing free education if voted into power.
“There is urgent need to alert him so that parents will stop taking their children to private schools and end up paying exorbitant amount as school fees of their wards.”
Just maybe, the parents of the children in private schools are the real Nigerians, no?
