Governors’ visit, Osinbajo’s meeting – a timeline of Buhari’s activities since he became a ‘Londoner’

President Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria for the second time on May 7 for medical follow-up in London.

Since his exit, there had been reports that the President died in London, while Ekiti State governor had continued to insist that Buhari was on life support.

He had also threatened to release pictures of the President on life support.

Here’s a timeline of activities the President has been involved in since he left the country:

May 30, 2017: Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari visited the President in London, 23 days after he left for his medical follow-up.

June 25, 2017: The Presidency released a voice message from President Muhammadu Buhari to Nigerians to downplay media reports that he is suffering from speech impairment.

The message which was in Hausa, felicitated with Nigerians on the occasion of Eid-el Fitr, while also thanking them for their support.

July 3, 2017: Buhari commiserated with Nigerians on the death of elder statesman, Maitama Sule.

In a letter addressed to the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and personally signed by the president he described the death of the patriarch as a heavy loss to Nigeria.

July 11, 2017: Acting President Yemi Osinbajo travelled to London to hold a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Osinbajo returned the next day and presided over federal executive council (FEC) meeting at Abuja.

July 13, 2017: The Presidency said ailing Muhammadu Buhari wrote and called Bisi Akande, on the telephone to commiserate with him on the death of his wife, Omowunmi.

July 23, 2017: A delegation of APC governors and leaders visited Buhari in London, where he is receiving medical treatment.

This visit produced the first picture of the President since he left the country.

The delegation were hosted to lunch by the President and included the Party Chairman, John Oyegun; Governors of Imo, Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi.

July 26, 2017: President Muhammadu Buhari received the delegation from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum at the Abuja House, London.

The delegation was led by the NGF chairman, Governor Abdulaziz Yari and includes Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Umar Ganduje (Kano) and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

July 30, 2017:  Cable News Network (CNN) made a mockery of Nigeria over the continued absence of President Muhammadu Buhari from the country.

In one of its programmes, the television station asked, “The head of state from which country has not set foot in his homeland in over two months?”

The options were given as Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Nigeria and Syria. It went on to tick the option ‘Nigeria’.

August 3, 2017: The Presidency said President Muhammadu Buhari called Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola to commiserate with him on the death of his mother, Saratu Aregbesola.

There were also reports that former President Olusegun Obasanjo held a meeting with Buhari in London. 

Obasanjo was reportedly accompanied on the visit by a former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

August 4, 2017: Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in London.

Welby stated that he was delighted to see the President recovering rapidly. Buhari thanked the Archbishop for his continued support.

August 6, 2017: President Muhammadu Buhari called Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, to commiserate with him over the attack on the St. Phillips Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state.
