Huge challenge for FG as Polytechnic lecturers embark on indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Wednesday embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike, citing non-implementation of an agreement it signed with the government in 2009 and a memorandum of action in 2017.

Announcing the development in a statement on Tuesday, National President of the union, Usman Dutse, said the resolution was reached at ASUP’s 93rd National Executive Council (NEC), meeting held at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos on November 29, adding that a notice directing all members nationwide to comply with the action, which it said will be comprehensive and total has been issued, until all issues raised were adequately addressed by the government.

“We are commencing our strike tomorrow(today) as scheduled. Everything is set and there is no going back. “There is an invitation for a meeting on December 17, but we will still commence our strike on Wednesday,” he said.

“I don’t know what will happen at the meeting or what they have decided, but until we meet with them, we cannot predict. I don’t know what they plan to present until we meet with them,” Duste added

The major areas neccesitating the strike action include the non-implementation of the NEEDS assessment report of 2014, non-payment of salaries in many state-owned polytechnics, pension deductions and other statutory deductions from staff salaries.
