“I never thought I’d live to see 30” – Tyler Perry opens up to Oprah

Tyler Perry, who makes films that sell to predominantly Christian audiences around the world, makes no secret about his struggles during childhood.  He says that as a child, he dealt with an abusive father and says that he was also sexually abused by more than one adult.

Perry claims that writing stories was his way to escape the horrors of his childhood so that he could share a story of success and survival that would help and inspire others.

In Tyler’s appearance on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” Perry discusses his childhood challenges and says that he could have easily gone down a different path in life.  He says that many young people who go through the same things might have made different decisions and ended up in different situations from himself.

“Statistics say that I’m supposed to be in jail,” Tyler said. “And I’m not supposed to be alive.”

Perry, who was named last year as the highest earner in all of Hollywood, says that he had a time in his life where he didn’t think he would live for very long.

“Even growing up, I thought I’d never live to see 30,” he said. “Just did not believe that I would see 30 years old… Everything around me said that [wasn’t] supposed to happen.”

Well, Perry did make it past 30. He is now 43-years old and a major power broker.  He releases several films per year and just inked a massive deal with Oprah Winfrey that is adding millions to his bank account.  Good for Tyler Perry.
