It’s always within your power to choose how you show up | The Daily Vulnerable

The Daily Vulnerable

Chude Jideonwo

It’s the first work day of the year, isn’t it?

Knowing several people, you are coming with gritted teeth, thinking that you are going to do battle and that life is a jungle. I know because I used to be like that.

My life is not a battle. It is not a jungle. My life is a dance.

It is a dance not because I don’t have ‘battles’, I promise you, I have them.

I’ve realized that I have a number of choices across the spectrum. One, I can choose to approach life and work with anger, focusing on how I will survive it.

Or, I can approach it asking ‘how can I make it easier? How can I make it leas stressful and more joyful? Which relationships can I create at the workplace that makes work a joy to be at?

What can I do about my goals to make it easier even when I don’t meet them? Who can I reach out for help when I’m confused? What can I do to make life easier for myself everyday?

Look, I’ve done some jobs I hate. I’ve worked with some clients I hate. I’ve supervised people that stretched me till the ends of the earth. Each time, I reminded myself that it is always within my power to choose how I show up.

As you show up at work, it is within your power to choose how you show up – even if you do the most despicable job. Until you can change that job to make it as joyful and less stressful and less frightening as it is.

You may be a bit powerless, but none of us is utterly and completely powerless.
