A five-year-old girl is fighting for life after being raped and tortured by a man in India who held her hostage for two days.
The girl went missing Monday and was found Wednesday by neighbours who heard her crying in a room in the same New Delhi building where she lives with her parents.
The girl was found alone, but police say the man who lives in the room was arrested in Bihar state, about 620 miles east of the capital.
The young girl has serious injuries, including a slashed neck and bite marks, according to DK Sharma, medical superintendent of India’s largest government-run hospital.
New Delhi residents protested today against what they said was a lack of police action.
The news comes just weeks after a girl aged just three years old was kidnapped and gang raped in India.
The youngster was sleeping beside her mother on a pavement in Tirur, in southern India, when she was kidnapped.
The homeless family only noticed she was missing the next morning.
The child was found passed out in the street by students on their way to school.
One of the students said: “She had a high fever and she had ants crawling all over her body.”
India has seen outrage and protests against rape and attacks on women since the fatal gang-rape of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi last year.
Student Jyoti Singh was travelling on a public bus on December 16 when six men raped and severely beat her before stripping her naked and throwing her from the moving vehicle.
She died 12 days later after signs her vital organs had failed, according to staff at the hospital in Singapore where she was flown for specialist treatment.
And in March, a 39-year-old Swiss tourist was beaten and gang raped in front of her husband as they camped in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.
