[The Sexuality Blog] Kevin Spacey just came out, but we really wish he didn’t

So this morning two time Oscar winner and House of Cards actor Kevin Spacey, released this statement via Twitter (when did it become de rigeur to release statements via twitter? Oh yeah, Trump, never mind). The big gist behind his statement is that Spacey finally confirms a rumour that has been going around Hollywood since the 80’s, that Spacey is in fact gay.

The actor who has lived publicly as a straight man, dodging questions about his sexuality and jealously guarding his private life, publicly parading a string of women between the 80’s and 90’s and 2000’s as his girlfriends. But the circumstances that have forced Kevin Spacey to come out are way more important than him coming out and way more damning. Spacey was forced to come out following accusations from actor Anthony Rapp that Spacey invited him to a house party when he was 14, orchestrated events so that he would be left alone with Rapp and then proceeded to sexually assault him, even though he knew fully well  that Rapp was a minor. Rapp is only one person in a long list of young people in the film industry who Spacey has been alleged to have either propositioned, had sex with or sexually harassed or tormented or used his position of power to bully and while many other people have come out in differing capacities before now, the unique circumstances that have followed the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal and his subsequent fall from grace means that the general audience is more sympathetic towards victims of celebrities who use their influence to hurt or assault young people.

Spacey knew he had to do something and do it quickly, and choosing to come out as a response to being accused of sexual harassment and an attempted rape of a minor is a jerk move. First of all in his apology/coming out statement, he refuses to take responsibility for his actions and shows absolutely no remorse, blaming drunkeness and his ‘personal issues’ for actions he never directly owns up to. Then he phrases his coming out as a ‘choice’, as though the circumstances have forced him to ‘pick a side’ as a way to overcome his deviance. The LGBT community has had to work tireless to disavow itself of the misconception that they are sexual deviants and pedophiles looking to take advantage of minors, and for Kevin Spacey to suggest, however, subtly that his sexual deviance is somehow a consequence of his sexuality is despicable.

We hope that Anthony Rapp uses the full might of the law to exact justice on Kevin Spacey and we at the Sexuality Blog are tired of celebrities who will do anything but accept that their actions were wrong and attract consequences. Kevin Spacey, we see through your bullshit, you are fooling no one.
