[The Legislative Blog]: Who are the 10 senators that voted against the #NotTooYoungToRun bill?

The Nigerian Senate is currently in the process of making amendments to the nation’s constitution. With 97 senators in attendance and 33 bills to be considered, many Nigerians paid peculiar attention to the #NotTooYoungToRun bill that aims to reduce the age qualification for political offices.

At the review session today, we found as the Senate Twitter handle reeled out the results of the votes that out of 97 senators, 10 were against the #NotTooYoungToRun bill while one declined to vote.

Although we have no knowledge of the identities of these 10 enemies of progress, we have every reason to declare that they failed the nation, every individual who voted to see them gain their seats in the House and essentially, all their constituents.

We try to figure out what these ones may possibly have in common. Are they the older crop of senators or longest serving ones who are too afraid to be challenged by younger contestants? Or are they the ones who have lost touch with their constituents and are aware of younger contestants who have such advantage? Or they are just overwhelmed with Ephebiphobia – fear of youth”?

The senators had raised suspicions last week when the bill was reported to have been removed from the list of those that would be considered in the constitution review but the suspicions were shut down by the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly who assured that the bill was still in place but had only been given another title.

It is clear that a percentage, albeit small, made an attempt to stifle the #NotTooYoungToRun bill but failed. Now that it has been passed, we’ll watch how Nigerian politicians manipulate it to their advantage.
