Metuh’s lawyer absent at trial, judge refuses to adjourn

Justice Akan Obong of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, has refused to adjourn the trial of Olisa Metuh, spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in spite of his lawyer’s request for adjournment.

The judge on Wednesday, maintained that the trial of Metuh must continue notwithstanding the absence of Onyechi Ikpeazu, the lead counsel of the defence team.

One of Metuh’s lawyers, Emeka Etiaba, informed the court that the lead counsel was involved in another case at the Supreme Court, hence the request for adjournment.

The lead prosecution- Tahir Sylvanus, countered Etiaba’s request for the adjournment of the trial, noting that the latter could hold brief for the absent Ikpeazu.

After taking the arguments of both parties into consideration, the judge ruled that the trial must continue, owing to the fact that Ikpeazu never wrote a letter notifying him of his absence, as required by law.

Metuh is on trial for allegedly receiving N400 million from the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

The amount received by Metuh is part of $2.1 billion meant for purchase of arms to prosecute the war against Boko Haram but was instead diverted by the former NSA for personal and political purposes.
