During the duel, one of the militants was also killed by the police.

The militants who wore military uniforms and were armed with AK-47 rifles ambushed the policemen.

It would be recalled that the area has been visited by militants and kidnappers in the past few months.

During one of the operations, the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni was kidnapped.

To stem this menace, a police team was sent to the area to forestall further occurrences.

A source was quoted to have said the police team, comprising of SARS’ personnel from the Ojo and Iba divisions, had stormed the area around 11am and combed it for over an hour without getting any of the suspects.

The source who was at Iba Police Station said, “The team left the place which is behind the Iba police station and went to the station. They were still at the station when someone called a senior officer that the boys have come out and were disturbing again.

“So, the team set out. But they never knew it was an ambush. As they got to the swampy area near the military barracks, the militants opened fire on them.

“The Sergeant was shot and his skull ripped open. The police engaged the militants and also killed one of their men. They fled into the swamp with his body.”
