As we gear up for the upcoming general elections slated for March 28, the two major presidential candidates, the All Progressive Congress’ Gen. Muhammad Buhari (retd.) and the People Democratic Party’s Goodluck Jonathan have campaigned and still campaigning via available media options – from their CNN interviews, to presidential debates and campaign rallies, to prove why they deserve the presidential seat.

The most recent is their interview session tagged ‘Election Special’ with media mogul Mo Abudu, CEO of Ebony Life TV and we bring you the highlights.

Pres. Goodluck Jonathan’s interview:

During Jonathan’s interview, he reiterated that countless reforms have been made, however, people do not appreciate or recognize this fact because the current level of insecurity in the country has overshadowed the progressive works being done.

He mentioned various projects accomplished by the government including the creation of over 1 million jobs per year during his administration, programs implemented to encourage entrepreneurship among youth, privatization of the power sector, advances in the healthcare sector, and more.

“The greatest problem in Nigeria is insecurity and Boko Haram and that is why it is as if people don’t appreciate and see what we are doing. The insecurity in the country is beclouding our achievements.” he stated

Power sector: Power sector has always been a problem….but it is just like when the telecommunication was first introduced in Nigeria, it took a while before it became easy and accessible and now so many can use it and afford it, some even have five, six sim cards….We are getting to stage when Nigerians will take power for granted just like in other parts of the globe.

Transportation: In transportation, for about 30 years, the rail way system was dead but now we have revived that sector.

Economy/GDP: For sometime now, petroleum has not been contributing to the GDP, it’s from Agriculture and Manufacturing  sector the the country’s GDP relies now.

On unemployment, even in other parts of the world, Government doesn’t provide jobs for the unemployed and youths, it’s the private sector. The Government only funds prospective entrepreneurial ideas…the government grooms entrepreneurs that can survive on their own and that is what we are going to introduce soon before the elections. The number of graduates entering the labor market is over 1.8million and it is difficult to cater for them all, but now we are working on creating over 2million jobs…that is why we are spending on the entertainment sector, sports because youths are interested in these sectors.

Healthcare: On health, University of Ibadan now does open heart surgery, NSUKKA and others now perform kidney related surgeries and it is an achievement for our administration…you see our fight against the Ebola virus too. I promised to eradicate Polio in 2011 and today there is no more Polio in the country, the last case was attended to about six months ago.

Education: All states now have Federal Universities. When i came on board, 12 states did not have but now they have. We have introduced Maritime centers and police academy as options for students too.

What he has done to get us out of corruption: What people have done over the period is to suppress corruption and that doesn’t solve that problem. The key to solving it is preventing it.

People are saying we don’t arrest people but we do, it’s just that the Nigerian law which is designed after the British law is limiting us.  What we are doing to even prevent people from even being corrupt. So now we are trying to create means of money for people e.g in the farming sector, we have equipped them well enough so that they don’t have to use corrupt means to acquire wealth. We are doing so much, it’s just that we are keeping quiet till they become visible and glaring to the public eye.

To deal with corruption, it is a matter of how do we prevent it and stop it from escalating. When i win this election and come back, i will clean up the major sectors where corruption has eaten deep.

Youths should not allowed themselves to be used in killing other people. Those instigating you to kill e.g government officials are protected and well secured, yet you allowed yourself be swayed into killing, any election is not worth the blood of anybody.

On his regrets: Everyday we learn, I have no regrets.

He noted that because these problems did not start over night, change will not occur immediately. He also revealed that in the fight against Boko Haram, he would employ the strategy of working closely with neighbouring countries to ensure that Nigeria’s borders are secure.

On his ideas for reviving the economy
